There is nothing I love more than a good before & after photo. Flipping through page 6 photos of celebs before and after their “shocking!” transformations. Those “How it Started vs. How It’s Going” memes. And of course, well styled before & after photos of my own clients.

If you are in the business of helping other achieve their body goals, you too will want to master the art of a good Before & After photo. No, you don’t need to invest in fancy equipment or photo editing tools. All you need is a few simple guidelines to ensure your client knows their money was well spent and your potential clients can see what real results look like.

  1. Consistency is key!

Stick to the same location for both the before and after photo. If you can identify one wall or backdrop you can use for all clients, even better.

Keep the lighting the same; i.e.; if it’s brightly lit in the before picture, don’t dim the lights in the after (or vice versa).

Ask your client to wear the same undergarments in both pictures. Let them know if advance it’s “photo day” You don’t want it to look like it was just a case of ill-fitting underwear that was causing those “before” love handles.

Capture the photo from the same angle and position. Even if it’s not done on purpose, different angles automatically trigger skepticism and “there’s no way that’s real” commentary from the haters.

2. Focus on the results.

Try to pick a plain, monotone backdrop. The focus should be on the body, not whatever is hanging in the background.

If you only treated a specific area, make sure it is the focal point of the picture. Don’t let areas you didn’t touch take away from the results you were able to achieve.

3. And the most important rule – keep your photos unedited

You may think no one will notice, but years of bad Photoshop have turned us all into experts. I’d rather see a slight improvement than an over the top transformation that makes me question the validity of the entire procedure. You don’t want one fake photo to tarnish your reputation. You’re not a D-list celebrity … you’re a Wrap Star!
